Raw opens with a photo recap of last night’s WWE Championship match where CM Punk defeated John Cena to become the WWE Champion, however, Kevin Nash returned and powerbombed Punk as Albert Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to become the new WWE Champion.
The Raw intro hits as we are welcomed to tonight’s show that takes place at the Sports Arena in San Diego, CA. Triple H’s music kicks off the show as the COO makes his way to the ring. Hunter says a lot of people are upset over what happened last night and apologizes to the WWE Universe and to John Cena for making a mistake by counting the pin fall while his foot was under the rope. Triple H promises to apologize to him later on face to face.
Triple H continues by saying that he had nothing to do with Kevin Nash’s involvement of what happened after the match. Hunter said Nash asked him for a couple of tickets to the show and he left them at will call for him and that’s all that he did. He goes on to say that he has texted Nash and asked him to explain his actions and Nash agreed to appear as long as he can tell the truth on the matter.
As far as Alberto Del Rio goes, he didn’t know anything about it but that’s just how Money in the Bank works. Triple H said he promised that there would only be one undisputed WWE Champion, and there is as Hunter introduces the new champion, Alberto Del Rio.
Del Rio comes out to the ring and says it was his destiny to become WWE Champion. He continues by saying that it wasn’t his intention to cash in last night, but he couldn’t resist after what Kevin Nash did. Del Rio says he wants to represent all of the fans with respect, honesty and passion and says he is going to be signing autographs and taking pictures in the lobby.
Del Rio says that he will also be facing the former WWE Champion, Rey Mysterio, in a match tonight in his first title defense. Del Rio says he is happy to face him since everyone loves Mysterio and that he, too, loves Mysterio as the crowd breaks out into a “619” chant. Del Rio then says that he loves to beat Mysterio and that he will beat the little chihuahua tonight in San Diego, before saying that the city will have a new hero after tonight.
The announce team hypes tonight’s main event and we see Triple H walking into John Cena’s dressing room as we head into a commercial break.
R-Truth vs. John Morrison (Falls Count Anywhere)
Prior to the match, a split screen shows Morrison talking about beating Truth on his own terms. The bell rings as the two go at it as they trade pin attempts in the early going. Morrison then clotheslines Truth out to the floor and takes him out by diving over the top rope. Morrison continues pounding on Truth around the ringside area and picks up another near fall after jumping off the railing and connecting with a kick. Morrison goes for a suplex but Truth blocks it and suplexes Morrison face first onto the floor. Truth picks up a near fall as we head into a commercial break.
We return to the match that is still going on around the ringside area as Truth is pounding on Morrison’s neck. Truth then rams his knee into Morrison’s temple and picks up a couple of near falls in the process. Truth continues by crotching Morrison on the guard railing before clotheslining him into the crowd. The fight goes through the crowd as Truth takes his time staring down the fans, which gives Morrison time to connect with a kick to take Truth down. Morrison then follows with a clothesline and suplexes Truth onto a desk chair. Morrison then hits Truth a running knee to the face and picks up the pin fall.
CM Punk is seen walking backstage and the announce team say that he probably doesn’t even know Kevin Nash is going to be here tonight as we head into a commercial break.
A video package highlighting Rey Mysterio winning the World Championship at WrestleMania 22 is aired. He will get a shot at the WWE Championship tonight against the new champion, Alberto Del Rio.
The Miz comes down to the ring wearing a suit and says he is out there to say hello to someone in the audience, and that person is Jared from Subway. Miz says Jared is a Mizfit but he isn’t a fan of his. Miz says he thinks he can be a better spokesperson for Subway than he ever could. Miz walks to the ringside area and steals his sub as Miz does a promo for the new Oven Crisp Chicken Sandwich.
Miz then walks back into the ring and tells the Subway executives that the only reason their sandwich is trending is because of him. He then says he will once again go on to become the WWE Champion before taking a bite out of the sub and smiles for the camera. Did we just see a Subway commercial on Raw?
A limo is arriving backstage and Kevin Nash is seen getting out of it and begins walking in the arena as we head into a commercial break.
Country star Trace Adkins is seen sitting ringside as we head into the next match of the night.
Match 2: Eve & Kelly Kelly vs. the Bella Twins
Kelly Kelly starts out strong against Nikki but she is able to quickly turn it around as the Bella’s work Kelly over with double team moves. They focus on Kelly’s knee until she is able to finally crawl to her corner and tag Eve into the match. Eve hits a neckbreaker before heading to the top rope and hitting a moonsault to pick up the pin fall.
After the match, Beth Phoenix and Natalya come out and stand on the entrance stage to stare down Kelly Kelly and Eve. The announce team then tell us that Kevin Nash is here to explain his actions and he is on his way out as we head into a commercial break.
Kevin Nash is introduced as a former WWE and WCW Champion and one of the most charismatic superstars in WWE history as he makes his way to the ring. Nash grabs a microphone and thanks Triple H for allowing him to come out and explain his actions. Nash says he was watching the main event when he received a text message that asked him to stick the winner for him after the match. Nash says what he did to CM Punk was business, pure and simple.
Nash then tells Triple H that they need to get on the same page as he is interrupted by CM Punk’s music. Punk comes out to the stage and asks if he is supposed to believe the crap he is saying. Punk says he thinks Triple H or Kevin Nash don’t know what is good for business and now he has proof. Nash steps in and tells him to watch his mouth and Punk tells Nash to watch the show as he says whatever he wants whenever he pleases.
Punk then offers that Hunter may be telling the truth and that Nash is the lying. Nash asks if he wants if he wants to see the text message he got and Punk reads the text he got from his little sister that says “OMG! Kevin Nash! WTF! Thought he was dead! LOL!” Punk says he isn’t pissed at Alberto Del Rio since he did what anyone else he would have done, but he is pissed at Triple H for bringing his old cronies back.
Nash says Triple H has been shaking things up around here and calls Punk an indy wrestler that has main evented twice. Nash says he should be thanked for getting all of the wrestlers guaranteed money and tells him to get a clue. Punk says Nash did something he shouldn’t have done since it shows Punk that he wants to fight and begins walking towards the ring. Security steps in and stands in Punk’s way and says if security are watching Nash’s back, there is nobody watching over Triple H, as he will go and get answers from the COO himself.
Footage of Rey Mysterio winning the fatal four way match at Fatal 4-Way in 2010 is aired as tonight’s main event is again hyped.
Kevin Nash is seen walking into Triple H’s dressing room but he is stopped by John Laurinaitis, who says the way CM Punk spoke to him is unacceptable. Laurinaitis then asks Nash to speak together in his office as they walk off.
The issues between Dolph Ziggler and Vicki Guerrero is aired as the two are sitting at the announce table for the next match.
Match 3: Alex Riley vs. Jack Swagger
The match begins and Swagger quickly takes Riley down as Ziggler says he would be a champion whoever he is with but says Vicki compliments him. Back to the match, Swagger picks up a near fall and continues to work over Riley as Vicki says that Ziggler never kissed her.
Ziggler says Vicki knows her role as Riley finally turns the tide of the match with a spinebuster. Riley follows with a series of clotheslines and picks up a near fall as Vicki steals JR’s hat. Vicki then distracts the referee as Swagger ackwardly picks up Riley for a powerbomb and picks up the pin fall.
After the match, Ziggler takes the hat away from Vicki and stomps on it before placing it back on JR’s head. We then see footage of Rey Mysterio winning the tournament to become the new WWE Champion last month on Raw as the main event is again hyped.
Vicki Guerrero is seen walking backstage as Jack Swagger comes up and thanks her for what she did tonight. Swagger says both Edge and Dolph Ziggler wouldn’t be anywhere without her and compliments on how she looks. Swagger then suggests that she may want to start expanding her roster like the great managers of the past who managed multiple wrestlers before walking away.
A video package highlighting the Summer Slam Axxess and some of the superstar appearances that took place over the weekend. Celebrities and other media personalities give their own two cents about the WWE.
CM Punk walks into a Triple H’s dressing room where Stephanie McMahon is at. Stephanie says she is sorry about how he lost the title and says in the end, people get what they deserve before walking out as we head into a commercial break.
Match 4: Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne vs. David Otunga & Michael McGillicutty
Kingston and Bourne start out strong against the Tag Team Champs but their momentum is stalled by McGillicutty. Otunga comes in and continues working Bourne over with clothelines and picks up a near fall. McGillicutty is tagged in and takes his time with Bourne who is able to get to his corner to make the hot tag to Kingston.
Kingston comes in and takes out the tag champs. As his back is turned to Otunga, McGillicutty nails Kingston from behind and Bourne makes the blind tag. Kingston then connects with a kick to McGillicutty as Bourne follows with the Air Bourne to pick up the pin fall over the champions in this non-title match.
Rey Mysterio is seen in the dressing room putting on his mask as the main event is coming up next.
Match 5: Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio (WWE Championship)
Del Rio is introduced by Roberto Rodriguez and comes to the ring in a Ferrari F140, while Mysterio comes out to a big pop from the hometown crowd. The bell rings as Mysterio uses his quickness to pick up a couple of near falls in the early going. Mysterio then sets Del Rio up on the ropes for the 619 but Del Rio escapes to the floor as we head into a commercial break.
We return to the match to see Del Rio in control and is trying to rip Mysterio’s mask off his face. Mysterio turns the tide of the match by tripping Del Rio into the turnbuckle and connecting with a drop kick. Mysterio then hits a tornado DDT and a springboard cross body for a near fall. Del Rio comes back with a knee to Mysterio’s face and continues going after his mask. Del Rio then misses with a dropkick as he slides out of the ropes and crashes to the floor.
Mysterio takes the fight to the outside as he hits a moonsault off the apron to takes Del Rio out on the floor. Mysterio rolls Del Rio into the ring and hits a seated senton before going for the 619, but Del Rio counters with a clothesline that levels Mysterio. Del Rio then takes Mysterio out with a spinning backbreaker for a near fall as Roberto Rodriguez applauds from the ringside area.
Del Rio then places Mysterio on the top turnbuckle and he connects with an enziguri but Mysterio is somehow able to kick out of the pin attempt. Del Rio is upset at not putting Mysterio away with that and Mysterio is able to nearly put Del Rio away by rolling him up, but Del Rio kicks out. Del Rio regains control of the match and tries for his armbar but Mysterio counters and hits the 619. Mysterio then heads to the top rope for a splash but Del Rio gets his knees up and pins Mysterio with a cradle for the victory.
After the match, Del Rio continues beating down Mysterio and sends him into the announce table. Del Rio focuses on Mysterio’s arm and puts him in the cross arm breaker as the referee tries to stop it. John Cena finally runs out and chases Del Rio away as Cena checks on Mysterio.
Cena grabs a microphone and says there are a ton of reasons for him to be pissed off. Cena says he left it all in the ring last night and Del Rio came in a took it all away. Cena says Del Rio is not a champion, but a target, and says every single person is now his enemy. Cena continues to say that Del Rio will have to defend his title and if he faces Cena, his destiny will be Cena kicking his ass.
